KEE concept heralds "new look" for the future of KIA

More than any other car-buyer, the sports coupe enthusiast knows instinctively when a car is right, when it is suited to its purpose. Shape, proportion, stance and both tactile and emotional aspects all add up to a car that stirs the blood. At the 2007 IAA in Frankfurt, Kia has revealed just such a car.

The KEE is a combination of all of those elements. It is a harmonious blend of everything that sets the sports coupe apart from the more functional vehicle – the vehicle that has a range of activities to undertake and a palette of needs to take into account for its owner. The sports coupe is single minded. It is about driving, pure and simple. It is about appearance, performance, emotion.

Yet KEE is more than just a svelte, exciting sports coupe concept. It is also the dawn of a new design language for the Kia brand – a language that will speak to motorists across the world about the Korean company's intention to become one of the major automotive names over the coming years.

Chief Design Officer, Peter Schreyer and his Frankfurt design team – headed by Gregory Guillaume – set out to make KEE a landmark car in Kia's history. It is no coincidence that its name plays on the word 'key' because that is how essential KEE is to the future of Kia. KEE also acknowledges the Chinese and Korean word ´Ki`- the cultural concept for life-force or spiritual energy.

KEE embodies Kia's desire to create a family of cars that will be instantly recognisable on the road and will have simple yet sophisticated appeal in the showrooms. Whether wide-eyed admirers of this new generation of vehicles are existing Kia customers – wise to the dramatically improved quality and traditional strong value of the current range – or entirely new audiences they will immediately recognise a range of cars aimed at those who enjoy driving and seek the perfect machinery to deliver that experience.

Schreyer commented:"KEE has to communicate a design language that will be seen on all future Kia products. That language has to be stated in certain elements of the visual representation – lines, shapes, details. But it has to be consistent and easy to understand. It must be visually strong and purposeful but it must be capable of being transferred from this sports coupe concept to a city runabout, a family saloon, a load-lugging MPV or a go-anywhere SUV.

"It was essential Kee should consist of a rhythm of lines – controlled, clean, pure. It had to have good, classic proportions and be well balanced," he added. This is the future for Kia design – it must display the purpose, the function whilst still being capable of delivering an emotional aspiration.
With its broad stance and low profile KEE, a new interpretation of a 2+2 coupe, has a simple yet distinctive outline thanks to its long sweeping bonnet, slightly lengthened cabin with striking graphic treatment, sculpted flanks and strong, yet almost hidden, swage lines.

Beneath the powerful and unique appearance are a host of fine details all hinting at the car's true purpose and harmonising to create a sophisticated design entirety. Whether it is the milled aluminium B-pillar visible through the panoramic grey-tinted glass, the distinctively individual 20 inch wheels and hand-cut Continental tyres or the small touches such as the electronic micro-switch door release set into the side-window glass, the clamshell rear hatch opening on electronic dampers or the unique front windscreen shape that mirror so many other details on the KEE, it is clear that this car has been lovingly created by people who care for design.

Inside – KEE looks and feels like a sports car that the keen driver will instantly feel comfortable and at ease in, with a cabin designed for maximum focus on driving. Clustered straight ahead, the main dials and controls are simple and straightforward utilising Kia's new standard red-orange illumination.

Behind the square-bottomed steering wheel are paddles to shift the six-speed sequential gearbox. Instead of a standard gear stick an ergonomically designed lever sits atop the milled aluminium centre console and requires only a nudge forward or backward to select drive mode. And the top of the computer mouse-like lever flips up to reveal the electronic starter button.

Again, the design team have concentrated on producing a realistic sports coupe – not a flight of fancy. Every element of its design should be clear, easy to understand and to use. All the main controls are fly-by wire, but their feel in operation has been created to deliver a sense of traditional operation. For example, the toggle switches mounted on the dashboard – echoing the DNA of generations of sports cars – let you navigate intuitively through the interface menu of the info-media center.

After pressing the starter button the driver will immediately recognise the throaty roar of a V6. The next generation 2,7 litre MUE-II engine, producing 200 ps, delivers instant response, enormous flexibility and scintillating performance on any kind of road.

Kia Kee uses light-weight aluminium or plastic panels and components wherever possible in order to allow the emphasis to remain on rapid and controlled progress that means simple fun and driving pleasure. This results in a low kerb weight with excellent balance biased towards the front to deliver neutrally safe handling. Yet KEE could be built with rear wheel drive or even all-wheel-drive allowing Kia to add to its growing range as its brand develops its reputation amongst a more exacting audience.

"All the main interior surfaces are covered in a semi-suede-like microfibre material and the body-hugging sports seats use a heard-wearing but distinctive metallic-finish cloth," explained Salome Etienne – one of the KEE's interior design team.

And continuing the real-life functionality of KEE, the rear of the passenger cabin is sufficiently spacious to allow four adults to travel in the vehicle when necessary. KEE is not intended to be a four-seat coupe but Kia knows that real people have real needs and the brand has no intention of moving into the exotic sports car territory that others so amply fill. And there is even space for a useful amount of luggage!

But echoing its concern for the comfort and convenience of its customers the designers have sought to ensure that when the need arises those rear passengers will not be confronted with a problem so common on most 2+2 coupes. "When the rear clamshell hatch is raised the roofliner stays fixed in place to ensure that passengers do not come into contact with the structure of the hatch when it is closed again," said Raphael Le Masson – the other interior designer.

Exterior designer Fabien Coradin said: "This car is about passion and energy. It is not an act of reason. Buying a sports car is not a logical choice and that is what we wanted for this car. It may not have been the normal reason behind most Kia purchases in the past – but the brand is changing and this car shows what Kia can be in the future. But we do recognise that functionality has a part to play."

Uncluttered, pure and timeless in execution yet modern, effective and usable in purpose, KEE represents a new ethos for the Korean firm. With KEE the entire design team is laying open its mind and its heart. This car stands as a clear indication of KIA's design philosophy and how it sincerely wish Kia to be viewed – exciting, appealing, creative, aspirational, beautiful and yet functional, purposeful and realistic.

Gregory Guillaume, Chief Designer Europe, commented: "This is a starting point. It shows how we think and what we want to do – appeal to the emotional side of our audience and bring that balance of purpose and emotion into the Kia design language. With KEE we are irrevocably heading off on our chosen path..."

KEE is the first step towards a new family look for Kia vehicles underscored by a focus on design and although KEE is primarily a concept vehicle it is one that could easily go into production should public demand dictate. KEE lays down very clear indications of how Peter Schreyer and his team intend future Kia vehicles should look and displays elements that its creators will transfer to future products. Presented on the strong frontal design with its distinctive headlamps and eye-catching LED cluster, the new style grille will become the new face of KIA across the product range.

He commented: "Kia have given me – and our design teams – a fantastic opportunity. Seldom is a designer allowed to shape the entire personality of a brand, given a clean sheet of paper and told to create the future. KEE is the first step on the road and I am so excited about the potential this journey can create."

"Although KEE is a sports coupe it could have been anything. We have already seen elements of our design development in Mesa and Kue shown at successive Detroit shows. Cee'd and its concept spin-offs including the ex_cee'd cabriolet have also started the process. But KEE is central to our future.

"It is our keystone to the future family we want to create. There is nothing in KEE's design that cannot easily and readily be transferred to production vehicles. There is nothing in KEE that I would not be prepared to see in future production vehicles. This car stands as a clear indication of our philosophy for vehicle design and as a surest possible signpost to the type of vehicles we shall be bringing to showrooms in the very near future.

"I want motorists to be able to identify Kia cars almost unconsciously. It doesn't matter what type of vehicle they see – right across the Kia range there should be a very obvious style and image that will encourage drivers to identify with the Kia brand and instantly understand the function of the vehicle at the same time as they admire its lines," he added.

KEE ultimately serves the Kia brand on a number of fronts – a design exercise for a sports coupe that currently does not feature in the company's line-up. No plans exist to put the car into immediate production but media and public reaction will be closely monitored.

It also allows Schreyer and the entire design team to present their thinking for a family appearance and design language to both internal and external audiences. In this respect KEE is the first stage in an on-going process that will be refined and re-examined but will stay true to the core elements of design contained in the car.

Perhaps most importantly KEE is a simple corporate statement to the motoring world that Kia is a brand underpinned with quality and reliability and now on top of that comes the emotional element of design. The future for Kia products lies in balance, clarity and purpose, and KEE, our latest show car embodies that philosophy.

In addition to showcasing its entire current range and its specialist client services, Ferrari is also unveiling a new model at the Frankfurt Motor Show this year. The Ferrari stand also perfectly brings together the two very different sides of the Prancing Horse’s soul: GT cars and the track. A new arrival – Once again the Frankfurt Show has been selected as the venue for the unveiling of a new Ferrari model. The 430 Scuderia is a special series model based on the F430 and developed specifically with the Prancing Horse’s sportiest and most passionate clients in mind. The new extremely high performance two-seater berlinetta is brimming with Formula 1-derived technology and joins the F430 and F430 Spider to complete Ferrari’s 8-cylinder model range.

The 430 Scuderia was officially unveiled by Michael Schumacher who contributed to its development at different stages, further strengthening the link between this new model and Ferrari’s Formula 1 single-seaters.

2) The entire range and the Formula 1 single-seater – All of the other Ferraris currently in production are also on the stand alongside the new 430 Scuderia: the F430 and the F430 Spider, Ferrari’s bestselling models which account for approximately 75% of sales, the 599 GTB Fiorano a year on from its launch, and the 612 Scaglietti, Ferrari’s flagship GT featuring updated cabin trim and accessories, including a magnificent Bose infotelematic system. The F2007 is also on show alongside the 430 Scuderia. The world of Formula 1 is also immortalised in “Boxenstopp”, a stunning image of a Scuderia Ferrari pit-stop in full swing created by internationally renowned artist-photographer Andreas Gursky.

3) Classic colours debut – The Frankfurt Show has also been chosen as the launch pad for several classic Ferrari colours and heritage-inspired interior trims: the F430 Spider on display features an ivory livery with chocolate brown Frau leather cabin trim, while the 599 GTB Fiorano sports a dark grey paintwork popular in the 1960s combined with a leather interior trim. The entire range of 10 historic colours together with the 16 contemporary shades is available for all models.

4) Financial performance – 2007 is proving to be a particularly impressive year for Ferrari from a financial perspective. Revenues increased by 14% in the first half of the year, with a forecast that the operating result will reach 15% by the end of the year. Ferrari’s output will also exceed the 6,000-car mark for the first time in 2007. North America, Germany, Italy and the UK continue to be the company’s largest markets together with France, Switzerland and Japan. These fantastic results are a testament to the exceptionally high standard of craftsmanship at Maranello, a standard also recognised when Ferrari was named Best Place To Work in Europe 2007.

5) Exciting new services for our clients – With demand for luxury products continuing to boom in existing and emerging markets, it is relatively easy for luxury brands to sell exclusive products which are often very expensive. What really counts at times like this is the exclusive relationship that the brand has established with its loyal clients and enthusiasts. 6) Personalisation. 100% success rate – Launched in 1997, the Carrozzeria Scaglietti Personalisation Programme offers clients the opportunity to tailor their car to meet their specific personal tastes and requirements – to turn their Ferrari into a truly unique and creative piece of engineering. There are four distinct personalisation areas: Racing and Track, Exteriors and Colours, Interiors and Materials, Equipment and Travel. However, in addition to these, clients are also welcome to make specific non-catalogue requests: since Sergio Scaglietti first began working with Ferrari, the Prancing Horse cars have been tailor-made for their owners. Today, in fact, practically 100% of all road-going Ferraris include personalisation features requested by their owners.

FERRARI 430 SCUDERIA – MAIN SPECIFICATIONS AND CHARACTERISTICS

Lightweight, simple and striking with a distinctive engine and exhaust sound: every last detail of the Ferrari 430 Scuderia exudes uncompromising sportiness as a direct result of its close links to the world of racing, which is reflected in the car’s name: “Scuderia”. Seven-times World Champion Michael Schumacher was also involved in the car’s development, with the result that the most advanced single-seater technology is now available to Ferrari’s sportiest and most passionate clients.

With a dry weight of 2775 lb (1250 kg) and 510 hp delivered at 8500 rpm by its naturally aspirated 4308 cm3 V8 engine, the 430 Scuderia boasts an extraordinarily low weight-power ratio of just 2.45 kg/hp, which allows it to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.6 seconds. It can also complete a lap at Fiorano in a time comparable to that of the Enzo, the Ferrari that has come to epitomise Maranello’s philosophy of transferring F1 content to its road cars.

Thanks to its sophisticated aerodynamics, F1-SuperFast2 gearbox and E-Diff coupled with the sophisticated F1-Trac traction control system, this sporty new mid-rear engined berlinetta combines ultra-nimble handling with blisteringly fast acceleration. The result? Absolutely superlative driving pleasure both on the road and on the track.

ENGINE AND ENGINE SOUND
The 430 Scuderia’s engine is an evolution of the F430’s 90° V8 which features a number of modifications to boost its specific power output from 114 hp/litre to 118 hp/litre.

The inlet ducts and exhaust system have been optimised, most notably through the adoption of the exhaust geometries derived from the F430 Challenge and the use of carbon-fibre on the intake manifold and for the filter housing to aid weight reduction.

Thanks to Ferrari’s Formula 1 experience, the 430 Scuderia’s ignition system boasts special coils and, for the first time on a market-targeted car, a dedicated CPU capable of monitoring the ionising currents generated inside the combustion chamber between the spark plug electrodes. This means that every single sparking detonation is detected for every cylinder and sparking is faster and more accurate across the board.

The 430 Scuderia’s compression ratio has also been increased to 11.88:1, thanks in part to a new piston design.

Particular attention was paid to achieving just the right sound from the engine and exhaust as this has always been one of the real trademarks of every Prancing Horse car. Cutting-edge calculation tools were employed to optimise the 430 Scuderia’s intake and exhaust systems and sound damping, with the result that the exhaust and engine sound inside the cabin is clear, powerful and particularly thrilling in full acceleration.

F1-SUPERFAST2 GEARBOX
The F1-SuperFast2 is an evolution of the F1 gearbox used on all of Ferrari’s models and reduces gear-shifting times to just 60 ms, the fastest time of any of the models in the Prancing Horse range, the lowest overall of any automated-manual gearbox. Significantly, Ferrari calculates the gear changing time according to the acceleration gap, not just the time it takes to engage the gear. The various stages are implemented in parallel (non-sequentially). In the case of the F1-SuperFast2, genuinely innovative integrated engine and gearbox management programmes allow the combined disengaging/engaging of the gears to take place partly in parallel with letting the clutch in and out.

E-DIFF2: E-DIFF WITH F1-TRAC
The E-Diff2 (which is integrated with the gearbox) is one of the primary components which clearly demonstrate the 430 Scuderia’s links to the track. In use for many years now in Formula 1, it is integrated with the car’s stability control system.

The 430 Scuderia is the first high performance road car after the F430 to sport an electronic differential. Torque is continuously distributed between the wheels via two sets of friction discs (one for each driveshaft) controlled by a hydraulic actuator.

The amount of torque actually transmitted to the driven wheels depends on driving conditions and brings considerable advantages in terms of performance, direction stability, active safety and handling feedback.

The F1-Trac traction control system, which is also derived from Ferrari’s F1 experience, ensures that even more drivers will be able to extract the maximum performance from the car, thanks to the exceptional cornering, safety and stability it offers. Introduced for the first time on a road car with the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano, it is faster and more precise than a traditional traction control system and optimises traction by modulating power delivery to help maintain the desired vehicle trajectory. The system estimates the maximum available grip thanks to continual monitoring of the relative speed of the wheels.

The integrated E-Diff and F1-Trac systems offers 40% more acceleration out of corners than a traditional traction and stability control system.

RACING MANETTINO
The manettino has already featured in several of Ferrari’s road cars but the 430 Scuderia features the special Racing version which puts the emphasis firmly on track-specific sporty driving and provides the driver with even more choice in terms of the car set-up. With this in mind, the ICE setting available with the F430 has been removed and a new CT- (Traction Control Off) setting has been introduced. This deactivates the car’s traction control, but unlike the CST position, retains the safety of the car’s stability control system to ensure a level of safety is maintained.

Another novelty with the 430 Scuderia is a button on the centre console which allows the suspension to be controlled separately from the predefined manettino strategy. This allows the driver to maintain maximum performance even on irregular road surfaces.

Michael Schumacher made a particularly valuable contribution to this area of the car’s development. In fact, he and the car development team worked together to ensure that the 430 Scuderia delivers both exceptional performance and fantastic driving pleasure which is within reach of non-professional drivers.

BRAKES
The 430 Scuderia boasts a specific braking system featuring CCM (carbon ceramic material) discs with specific dimensions to cope with the car’s increased performance.

The front discs are now 18 mm larger than those on the F430 and are designed to dissipate the extra heat created by the higher performance and are even more hard-wearing for greater efficiency. These components, together with 6-pot callipers, guarantee blistering performance at all times and, equally importantly, consistently efficient braking during prolonged track use.

AERODYNAMICS
The 430 Scuderia’s external styling has been honed to improve its aerodynamic efficiency by increasing overall downforce whilst still retaining the same drag values as the F430.

The aerodynamic efficiency of the newly-styled rear diffuser has been enhanced by the addition of a revised profile for spoiler at the rear of the engine cover and by the large venturis that run from the front wheel houses to the rear bumpers, achieving the patented “Base Bleed” effect developed by Ferrari as part of the FXX project. The Base Bleed effect has the double advantage of reducing the pressure in the rear wheel arch, thereby increasing downforce and lowering drag by blowing the car’s “wake”.

Furthermore, the new lower sill profiles ensure a more uniform distribution of air over the lower parts to ensure uniform distribution of the vertical load between the front and the rear of the car.

STYLING AND PERSONALISATION
The 430 Scuderia’s ultra-sporty character and blistering performance have led to the redesign of many of its exterior and interior styling features. This was done to give the F430-inspired model its own strong personality and to further enhance the aerodynamics of what is a very extreme car. The modifications made to the exterior focus on increasing downforce. In-depth research went into reducing the car’s weight and has led to extensive use of carbon-fibre, including some of the bodywork components.

The cabin has been inspired by racing and, once again, the emphasis has been on weight reduction and using technical materials where possible.

The new “Super Racing” seat boasts an all-carbon-fibre structure and is available in several different sizes as well as being manually adjustable, including a recline adjustment for the seat back. The Carrozzeria Scaglietti Personalisation programme has also been enhanced to meet the 430 Scuderia’s specific requirements as well. The Racing and Track area, in particular, now offers carbonfibre kits for the 430 Scuderia to enhance the message that this is a lean, track-focused driver’s car.

The headlamp assembly, engine cover, front spoiler, side sill kick panels and diffuser are all available in this high tech material. There is also now a choice of wheel rim colours and a specially designed carbon-fibre helmet is available to order.

FERRARI IN GERMANY

Ferrari Deutschland, which is based in Wiesbaden, has been managing our German market since 1989. With a total of 23 dealerships and 4 assistance points, Germany competes with Italy as Ferrari’s second largest market, accounting for around 12% of the Prancing Horse’s total sales.

Ferrari’s German clients have always retained very close links to the Prancing Horse and we ensure these links remain strong by offering a very high standard of service. At the start of 2007, for instance, we founded Ferrari Financial Services Deutschland, which is controlled by the Maranello-based Ferrari Financial Services SpA. The German company operates within Germany where, within a few short months, the services it offers have been taken up for 40% of the cars sold, as well as in Austria, France, Belgium and Switzerland.

Germany is Ferrari’s third largest market after the United States and the UK in terms of the percentage of clients registered with the Ferrari Owners’ Site (11%) while the Ferrari Club Deutschland has approximately 500 members spread throughout the country.

Toyota Australia TRD Aurion

Toyota Australia has injected 241kW of style, passion and performance into its range with the launch of the TRD brand and its first model, the supercharged TRD Aurion.

Locally designed and built, TRD Aurion is the most powerful Toyota ever seen in Australia.

It will sprint from 0 to 100km/h in 6.1 seconds and is speed-limited to a maximum of 250km/h.

Toyota Australia's senior executive director sales and marketing, David Buttner, said the TRD Aurion represented "Toyota plus".

"The TRD involvement elevates Aurion's dynamic capabilities while retaining Toyota's traditional quality, durability and reliability," Mr Buttner said.

"You've got Toyota - plus added style and performance."

TRD Aurion is offered in two grades: 3500S, for sport, and 3500SL, after sports luxury.

Both are fitted with the 241kW supercharged engine, sports suspension, performance brakes, 19-inch alloy wheels, TRD front and rear bumpers, side skirt and rear spoilers, sports seats, power driver's seat, alloy pedals, TRD scuff plates, air conditioning and leather-wrapped steering wheel.

The 3500S - with an RRP of $56,990* - is strategically positioned below the luxury-car tax threshold.

The upper-grade 3500SL has added features including Smart Entry and TRD Smart Start, full leather interior, clearance and reverse parking sonars, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, six-way power front passenger seat and TRD floor mats.

The 3500SL has an RRP of $61,500*.

Mr Buttner said the price, specification, value and performance of the TRD Aurion would position it against both local and imported competition.

"TRD Aurion matches the size of the locally produced sports sedans that are priced above it, and it exceeds the performance of its imported rivals," he said.

TRD Aurion is the world's first production car to use the Eaton TVS (Twin Vortices Series) supercharger.

"It offers new levels of efficiency and quietness," Mr Buttner said.

"The standard Aurion engine is already at the forefront of technology - the most powerful naturally aspirated six-cylinder powerplant in its class.

"The Eaton supercharger lifts performance to a new plane with instant throttle response and excellent acceleration at low engine speeds.

"The power is delivered consistently and evenly throughout the rev range, rather than suddenly producing a neck-breaking surge.

"At the same time, it's so fuel-efficient you don't need to be a 'petrolhead' to enjoy exhilarating performance."

TRD Aurion's supercharged 3.5-litre V6 engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with sequential shift.

"TRD Aurion will provide a balanced driving experience for a sophisticated market, integrating its power with dynamic cornering ability, precise steering response and impressive stopping performance," Mr Buttner said.

TWO MODEL GRADES FOR TRD AURION

New TRD Aurion has two model grades, both with supercharged quad cam V6 engine and six-speed sequential shift automatic transmission.

The two model grades are Toyota TRD Aurion 3500S and 3500SL.

Both models have a 241kW supercharged engine, TRD unique sports suspension, TRD performance brakes, TRD unique 19-inch alloy wheels with 245/35ZR19 Dunlop Sport Maxx performance tyres, TRD unique engine cover and TRD sports exhaust system with integrated exhaust outlets.

Interior features in 3500S include TRD red steering wheel, TRD scuff plates, red leather/suede sports seats featuring revised seat bolsters and leather door trim.

Unique exterior features include TRD front and rear bumpers, body-coloured rear spoilers and side skirts, and TRD 3500S grade badge.

The 3500S comes off the main Altona production line with rear underbody bracing, underbody aerodynamic enhancements, smoked headlamps and rear combination lamps, alloy sports pedals, multi-function trip computer, premium Optitron combination meter and six-disc CD changer.

In addition, TRD Aurion 3500S has Data Dot security.

There is one option for the 3500S: the combined option of moonroof, rear personal lamps and sun visors with lamps.

TRD Aurion 3500SL has higher specifications, including dual-zone air conditioning with push-button heater and ventilation controls, six-way power-adjustable front passenger seat, Smart Entry and Push Start, and clearance and reversing sonar.

TRD Aurion 3500SL's additional features over 3500S also include plum-coloured full leather seat trim, and colour-keyed (dark grey/plum) TRD leather-bound steering wheel and gearshift knob.

The 3500SL model's additional specifications also include TRD piano black door and dashboard highlights, TRD 3500SL grade badge, unique 3500SL grade bumper highlights, TRD floor mats and a unique TRD alloy wheel silver finish.

Toyota TRD Aurion 3500SL also has the added feature of a rear bumper reinforcement to optimise body rigidity and improve handling.

There are two option packs for the 3500SL: a combined option of moonroof, rear personal lamps and sun visors with lamps, and the combined option of those three features with satellite navigation system and Bluetooth™* mobile phone compatibility (satellite navigation units come with four-disc CD changer).

TRD AURION ENGINE BALANCES PERFORMANCE AND ECONOMY

New Toyota TRD Aurion has a supercharged engine for the best balance of performance, driveability and economy.

TRD chose supercharging over turbocharging for the new performance Aurion to optimise throttle response and torque.

It is the first original equipment (OE) application in the world for the new four-lobe Eaton TVS (Twin Vortices Series) supercharger.

TRD Aurion's supercharged 3.5-litre dual-VVT-i Quad Cam 2GR-FE V6 engine delivers 241kW of power at 6400rpm and 400Nm of torque at 4000rpm, on 98-octane premium unleaded petrol.

The supercharged engine has more than 300Nm of torque available from 1250rpm through to redline.

It is matched to an intelligent six-speed automatic transmission with sequential shift.

The supercharged engine gives TRD Aurion 0-100km/h acceleration of 6.1 seconds and standing 400m acceleration of 14.2 seconds.

The vehicle has been tested for fuel economy to the ADR81/01 standard, returning 10.9 litres/100km* on the combined cycle.

TRD Aurion has been developed and tested to meet Toyota original equipment quality, durability and reliability (QDR) standards.

It has been subjected to testing in extreme heat and cold, as well as a 100-hour dynamometer maximum load test and 10,000km V-max test.

TRD CHOOSES SUPERCHARGER FOR PERFORMANCE AURION

New TRD Aurion is Toyota's first supercharged model in Australia.

TRD chose supercharging over turbocharging to achieve instantaneous engine response and impressive low-down torque.

At just 1800rpm, the supercharged TRD Aurion engine matches the 336Nm peak torque of the naturally aspirated Aurion engine.

TRD Aurion's Eaton TVS supercharger is driven by a V-belt, off the engine's crankshaft.

According to a Toyota Australia survey conducted in 2001 using vehicles with data loggers, Australian driving preferences are unique.

Australian drivers want instantaneous response and low-down torque - to accelerate briskly to the speed limit like Americans.

But they also want to brake late into corners and maintain corner speed, like European drivers.

TRD worked with leading Melbourne-based motorsport engineering company Harrop Engineering Australia on supercharger development.

Harrop is one of only two Eaton agents worldwide.

Its applications engineering role in the TRD Aurion engine development included supercharger selection, design and casting of the supercharger casing and inlet manifold, and design of the drive-belt pulleys.

It also carried out the finite element analysis for stress in the engine and airflow analysis.

TRD's guidelines in the supercharged engine development included retaining the original equipment Aurion fuel rail and minimising the number of unique service tools.

TRD AURION HAS NEW EATON TVS SUPERCHARGER

TRD Aurion is the first OE vehicle to feature Eaton's new-generation four-lobe supercharger technology.

It has the new Eaton TVS (Twin Vortices System) supercharger.

The new four-lobe rotor Eaton TVS design offers significant advantages over three-lobe supercharger designs.

Its key benefit is greater thermal efficiency, which results in a lower inlet manifold temperature, improved charge density and increased performance.

Other benefits include a higher pressure ratio, increased airflow capacity for the same supercharger package size, increased operating range (rpm), higher efficiency and quieter operation, improved fuel economy at cruising speeds and instantaneous boost response.

The four lobes have 160 degrees of twist over their length, compared with 60 degrees in Eaton's current three-lobe supercharger designs.

The large lobe twist allows for a larger inlet port, improved airflow and a larger useable outlet port area.

The supercharger installation in TRD Aurion includes a specially developed sports muffler, with a 15 per cent reduction in back pressure compared with the OE Aurion muffler.

The muffler has been tuned for a sporty note while maintaining acceptable drive-by noise levels.

Development of the supercharged 2GR-FE engine has resulted in a unique engine calibration.

It is Toyota Australia's first in-house engine calibration.

This includes:


* fast throttle response, achieved by power enrichment and TRD pedal mapping;

* Euro IV emissions compliance, achieved by OE fuelling strategy at cruising speeds;

* low fuel consumption by using 98 RON fuel with active knock control.

UNIQUE PERFORMANCE BRAKE PACKAGE FOR TRD AURION

Toyota TRD Aurion has adopted a TRD-specific brake system for increased performance, better feel and a high degree of modulation.

TRD engineers developed the system in Australia with supplier PBR.

The Toyota TRD Aurion brake system includes new disc rotors front and rear, new aluminium calipers front and rear, and performance friction material.

TRD Aurion has 325mm by 32mm ventilated front discs with twin-piston aluminium calipers.

The Aurion Sportivo has 296mm by 28mm ventilated front discs and single-piston cast-iron calipers.

At the rear, TRD Aurion has 310mm by 18mm ventilated discs and single-piston aluminium calipers, replacing 286mm by 10mm solid discs and cast-iron calipers on the Sportivo.

Ferodo HP 1000 performance pads are used front and rear on TRD Aurion.

TRD AURION HAS UNIQUE SUSPENSION PACKAGE

New TRD Aurion has a unique Australian-developed suspension package, designed to deliver a dynamic, rewarding and high-quality driving experience.

It is based on the TRD suspension philosophy of matching spring and damper performance to provide increased control, agility and response while delivering a high-quality sports ride.

The suspension calibration is based on ensuring all the suspension elements work towards the focus of control.

Toyota TRD Aurion has increased spring rates front and rear, compared with donor Aurion Sportivo.

The front spring rate has been increased by 11 per cent and the rear spring rate by 10.5 per cent.

Ride height has been reduced on average by 12mm.

The dampers have TRD-specific damping force curves, with increased front rebound damping, and increased rear damper force in both bound and rebound.

The new damper curves improve body control while also making improvements in ride quality and the feeling of quality and solidarity.

The stabiliser bars are as per Sportivo: 25mm diameter front and 16mm diameter rear.

However, Toyota TRD Aurion also has the body control benefit of TRD-specific tuning for the internal rebound spring in the rear damper units.

The revised tuning means the internal rebound spring has less free travel and a retuned rate to invoke earlier and more frequent engagement, which improves body control without compromising ride.

The Toyota TRD Aurion rebound spring assists the damper units to better control vehicle roll, steering response and overall dynamic balance during handling manoeuvres.

The final calibration balances ride quality with damping force specification.

In addition to its new suspension calibration, TRD Aurion has new wheel alignment specifications front and rear.

It has increased negative camber for improved yaw response and agility.

Front toe-in has been increased for improved steering feel and response.

The rear suspension has neutral rear toe, to improve initial turn-in, nimbleness and responsiveness.

The high-grade TRD Aurion 3500SL has a stiffer rear bumper reinforcement than 3500S to increase steering rigidity on centre, reduce impact shake and reduce audible impact frequency.

This results in a feeling of higher quality, with a European taut body feel and a tighter dynamic experience.

The reinforcement is an extruded aluminium member that replaces the standard pressed steel bumper cross-member.

TRD Aurion's wheel and brake designs also contribute to the vehicle's dynamic performance.

The 19x8-inch aluminium alloy wheels are designed to improve brake ventilation and vehicle dynamics, while preserving impact resilience.

The tyres are 245/35ZR19 Dunlop SP Sport Maxx for high stiffness and optimum response and control.

The SP Sport Maxx is Dunlop's number one performance tyre.

These ultra-high-performance, low-profile tyres were chosen for maximum dry grip and wet-weather performance.

Advanced compounds, multi-radius tread design, construction and tread-pattern design ensure maximum wet and dry handling, sharp dynamic response and low tyre noise.

TRD Aurion's new brake package with aluminium calipers provides increased braking power without any penalty in unsprung weight (and no increase on the force needed to control the wheel when it strikes a bump).
